Flyers or Café Screens: Which Costs Less?

    August 26, 20268 min

When a small business in Kyiv needs customers "by tomorrow", the first idea is almost always flyers. Print 5,000 leaflets, put a promoter next to a metro station, and the city hears about you. On paper the logic is flawless. In practice, two weeks later the owner is looking at tens of thousands of hryvnias spent, a stack of undistributed flyers in the back room, and zero understanding of where the handful of customers who did show up actually came from.

Flyer advertising isn't "bad" — it's simply more expensive than it looks, because you are not paying for contact, you are paying for handouts. In this article we break down the real cost of leaflet distribution in Kyiv in 2026, calculate what one genuine contact costs, and compare that number with advertising on screens inside cafés — a format where a person sits in front of the medium for 20–40 minutes instead of walking past it in two seconds.

What flyer distribution in Kyiv actually costs

The budgeting mistake is always the same: people count printing and forget distribution. And the promoter is half the bill.

    Here's a typical estimate for 5,000 A6 flyers:

    Cost item Calculation Amount
Artwork design one-off, freelancer UAH 1,000–2,500
    Printing A6, 130 g coated, 4+4 5,000 pcs × ~UAH 1.5 ~UAH 7,500
    Promoter ~42 h × UAH 150/h ~UAH 6,300
    Coordination, delivery, contingencies UAH 500–1,000
    Total ~UAH 15,000–17,000

That assumes an optimistic rate: a promoter handing out 120 flyers per hour. In the rain, on a weekday morning, or at a badly chosen spot, the real number drops to 60–80. Which means either the promoter budget doubles, or part of the print run never leaves the bag.

So one distributed leaflet costs around UAH 3. And that is not yet a contact — it's just the moment a piece of paper changed hands.

What happens to those 5,000 leaflets next

Then comes the funnel that nobody draws into the estimate:

    • 5,000 — printed
    • ~5,000 — handed out (assuming the promoter works through the whole run)
    • ~1,500 — someone actually looked at the artwork instead of pocketing and binning it
    • ~150–300 — taken home or to the office
    • 10–25 — enquiries, if the offer is genuinely strong and local

Even in a good scenario with a 0.5% response rate, you get about 25 enquiries for UAH 15,000. That's roughly UAH 600 per lead — and only in the best case, for a business with a sharp local offer like "-30% on your first visit". For a more complex service the figure easily doubles.

And the price isn't even the main problem. The main problem is that you cannot verify a single number in that funnel. How many flyers did the promoter really hand out, and how many stayed in the bag? How many people looked at the design? You will never know.

The same maths for a café screen

Now let's price the second channel — advertising on screens inside venues. The format is simple: your 10-second clip runs in a loop on a screen in the café or bar's main room.

On HostAd the price is calculated per second of the clip per month and depends on the venue — from UAH 40/sec at Beer&Cool on Borshchahivska to UAH 90/sec at ZHNYVA on Pavlivska. So a 10-second clip in one venue costs UAH 400–900 per month.

    What you get for that:

    • A Kyiv café receives 150–250 guests a day. Over a month that's 4,500–7,500 visits.
    • A guest stays in the room for 20–40 minutes — the clip has time to appear several times, not once.
    • The audience isn't random: these are people who live, work or study within a few blocks of the venue.

That works out to less than UAH 0.20 per contact versus UAH 3 per distributed leaflet. And it's contact with someone who is sitting down, not hurrying somewhere.

The same budget, side by side

Take the same UAH 15,000 and look at what it buys:

    Flyer distribution Café screens
What you buy 5,000 handouts over 2–3 weeks 10-sec clip in ~20 venues for a month
Cost per contact ~UAH 3 (per handout) ~UAH 0.1–0.2 (per visit)
Contact duration 2–3 seconds on the move 20–40 minutes in the room, several plays
Repetition one leaflet per person the guest sees the clip on every visit
Geotargeting wherever the promoter stands the specific address of each venue
Measurement none QR scans by day and by venue
Changing the creative new run means new printing swap the clip at no printing cost
Weather and human factor critical irrelevant

The gap in cost per contact is roughly 20–30×. But the more important line is "measurement": in the first column you pay and believe, in the second you pay and see.

    When flyers do make sense

It would be dishonest to say leaflets never work. They have one property a screen doesn't: the physical carrier stays with the person. So flyer distribution is justified when:

    • the leaflet carries something that has to be brought along — a coupon, a barcode, an opening invitation;
    • you hand them out not on the street but at the point of decision — an insert in a delivery order, a leaflet on a partner venue's counter;
    • you have a hyper-local task — telling one particular building or office centre that a bakery has just opened next door.

What flyers cannot deliver is frequency. A person sees your offer once, at a moment you didn't choose. And recognition is built on repetition: we covered that in the piece on why frequency beats reach.

How to make the channel measurable

The main argument against flyer advertising is blindness. And there's only one cure: a link whose clicks you can count.

On screens that's built into the format. HostAd automatically bakes a QR code into your creative, and in your dashboard you see the number of scans — by day and by individual venue. Which means that after two weeks you don't know "it seems to have worked", you know specifically: this venue produced 40 scans, that one produced 6. You can switch the second one off and move the budget into the first. How to read those numbers and what counts as normal is laid out in our QR scan benchmarks.

The same trick works on leaflets — print a QR with a UTM tag on them. That's better than nothing, but it doesn't cure the blindness: you'll see the scans, yet you still won't learn how many flyers actually reached someone's hands and how many went into the bin around the corner.

Why this is easy to calculate on HostAd

HostAd is a marketplace of screens in Kyiv venues: right now that's 24 screens in craft coffee shops and bars across the city, from Borshchahivka and Solomianka to Podil, Pechersk and Obolon.

What that gives you when you're comparing channels:

    • The price is visible before you book. You open the map and see the owner's real price for every venue — no proposals, no phone calls, and no 15–30% agency markup.
    • Monthly booking. You don't need a quarterly contract to test a hypothesis: take one venue for 30 days, look at the scans, decide.
    • Every venue is a separate address. You're choosing not "Kyiv" but specific points near your own business.
    • Live in hours, not weeks. Upload the clip, pay, and after moderation it's on air — no print shop, no run, no logistics.

If you've never tried this format, the sensible first step isn't to move your whole flyer budget at once, but to run a minimal test on one or two venues: we showed what that looks like in numbers in the breakdown of a UAH 1,000 campaign.

    The bottom line

Flyer distribution in Kyiv costs around UAH 15,000 for 5,000 leaflets, works out to roughly UAH 3 per handout, produces a few dozen enquiries at best — and gives you no way to check whether any of it is true. The same budget on café screens buys a month of presence in two dozen venues, contact at 10–20 kopiykas, and a report with QR scans for every location.

You can test that without risk: open the HostAd map, find the cafés near your business, look at the price and take one venue for a month. It costs less than a single print run — and unlike that print run, you'll see the result in numbers.
