Advertising Slogan: Examples and How to Write One
A small business owner usually writes the advertising slogan ten minutes before the layout is due. The result is predictable: "Quality proven by time", "We care about you", "The best prices in town". These phrases fit a dental clinic and a tyre shop equally well, so the customer remembers none of them. The slogan takes the least space in an ad, yet it is the part a person recalls a week later. Below: what a working slogan is, six formulas, examples by industry and a way to check your version before launch.
What an advertising slogan is and why a small business needs one
An advertising slogan is a short phrase that carries the main promise of a business and repeats across all its advertising. It is also called a tagline. A slogan does three jobs:
- it explains what you sell and for whom;
- it separates you from the neighbour who offers the same service;
- it stays in memory, because a person sees the same phrase many times.
People often confuse a slogan with a unique selling proposition. The USP is the content: why a customer should choose you. The slogan is the form: how to say that content in five words. Write the USP first, then compress it into a slogan. The reverse order produces a pretty phrase with no meaning.
A large brand can afford an abstract slogan, because it buys reach for years and fills the phrase with meaning itself. A local business does not have that budget. Its slogan must work from the first contact: name the service, the benefit or the place.
5 signs of a slogan that works
- Short. Three to six words. A person does not finish a longer phrase on a screen and does not repeat it aloud.
- Specific. The slogan contains a number, a deadline, a place or a result. "Phone repair in 40 minutes" is stronger than "Fast repair".
- About the customer, not about you. "We are a team of professionals" speaks about the company. "No toothache by tonight" speaks about the person.
- Easy to say. Read the slogan aloud. If you stumble, the customer stumbles too.
- Does not fit a competitor. Insert the name of another company. If the phrase sounds equally true, it says nothing about you.
6 formulas: how to write a slogan
A formula does not replace an idea, but it gives a start when the page is empty. The examples below are illustrative and were written for this article.
| Formula | How to build it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit + time | The result and the time the customer needs to get it | "A clean car in 25 minutes" |
| Problem → solution | Name the pain and remove it | "Boiler broken? A technician in one hour" |
| Place | Tie the business to a district or a street | "Your barber in Podil" |
| Number | One figure that is easy to verify | "12 kinds of bread every morning" |
| Contrast | Show how you differ from the usual | "English without textbooks" |
| Question | Ask about the customer's situation | "When did you last check your eyesight?" |
The work order:
- Write the USP in one sentence, with no length limit.
- Write three slogan versions for each formula. You get 18 drafts.
- Cross out everything longer than six words and everything that fits a competitor.
- Keep two or three finalists and check them with the method from the testing section.
Slogan examples by industry
These slogan examples show how one formula sounds in different niches. Take the structure, not the text: your slogan must rest on a fact about your business.
Beauty and care
- "A manicure that lasts three weeks"
- "A haircut in 30 minutes. No appointment"
- "Your barber around the corner from the metro"
Health
- "Dentistry without pain and without queues"
- "Tests today, results tonight"
- "Glasses in one hour"
Auto
- "Tyre fitting without an appointment, 20 minutes"
- "We find what other garages missed"
- "A car wash you are proud to give a lift after"
Food and delivery
- "Lunch in 15 minutes, or it is free"
- "Bread baked at five in the morning"
- "Delivery within the district in half an hour"
Education
- "Spoken English in 3 months"
- "The driving school where students pass the first time"
- "Guitar from zero to your first song in a month"
Services
- "Flat cleaning in 3 hours"
- "An accountant who answers the same day"
- "Phone repair while you drink your coffee"
Shops
- "Flowers that last two weeks"
- "Books recommended by a person, not an algorithm"
- "Furniture made to your size, not to a catalogue"
Real estate and renovation
- "Renovation on time, or we pay"
- "Solomianka flats: we know every building"
- "An estimate that does not grow"
A caution about promises: if the slogan contains a deadline, a guarantee or the word "free", the business must deliver it. The Law of Ukraine "On Advertising" prohibits inaccurate advertising, and a broken promise damages reputation more than a weak slogan does.
A slogan for a cafe screen: separate rules
A slogan for a social media banner and a slogan for a venue screen work in different conditions. A cafe guest looks at the screen for a few seconds: in the queue, while waiting for the order, or from a table. The video lasts 10–20 seconds and repeats in a loop. Four rules follow from this.
- One idea per video. The slogan is the only large text in the frame. The guest has no time to read the address, the phone number and the list of services.
- Large type and contrast. The guest reads the slogan from several metres away. Narrow italics over a photo are unreadable.
- The slogan stays on screen for at least three seconds. The article on the first 3 seconds covers the opening of the video in detail.
- A link to the place strengthens the slogan. The guest is in their own district, so the phrase "a 5-minute walk from here" is a useful fact for them.
Repetition works for you here. A regular guest comes for coffee several times a week and sees the same phrase each time. This is how a slogan settles in memory without large reach. The guide on ad copy for a screen explains how to build the rest of the text around the slogan.
How to check a slogan before launch
The check takes five minutes and needs no budget.
- The swap test. Insert a competitor's name. If the slogan is still true, rewrite it.
- The five-second test. Show the layout to a friend for five seconds and take it away. Ask them to repeat the phrase and say what you sell.
- The "so what?" test. Read the slogan and ask "so what?". If the answer contains no benefit for the customer, the slogan describes you, not them.
- The aloud test. Say the slogan three times in a row. A difficult phrase does not travel in conversation.
- The field test. Run two slogans in parallel and compare the response.
The fifth test gives the most accurate answer, because your real customer makes the decision. The setup is simple: two videos with different slogans, two separate QR codes or promo codes, the same period. The article on a 14-day creative A/B test gives a step-by-step plan.
Common mistakes
- The cliché slogan. "Quality and reliability", "Individual approach", "Wide range". A reader skips these phrases automatically.
- Wordplay only the author understands. If a pun needs an explanation, it does not work on a screen.
- Two slogans in one layout. Two promises compete, and the guest remembers neither.
- A new slogan every month. A slogan gains strength through repetition. Change the offer and keep the slogan.
- A promise the business does not keep. "The lowest prices" without proof is a risk of a complaint and a loss of trust.
Where to test a slogan on a live audience: HostAd
HostAd is a map of advertising screens in cafes and bars across Kyiv. The map now shows 29 screens: Podil, Pechersk, Holosiiv, Solomianka, Shevchenkivskyi district, Obolon. For slogan work the service gives four advantages.
- Monthly booking. You take one screen for a month as a test, with no quarterly contract. That is enough to compare two slogans.
- Transparent pricing. The price of each screen is visible on the map before booking. There is no agency markup.
- Self-service. You choose a venue, upload the video and pay online. You replace the creative with a new slogan without calls and commercial proposals.
- Precise geography. You choose a cafe in your own district, for example ZHNYVA on Pavlivska Street, and write the slogan for people who live and work nearby.
An advertising slogan does not have to be brilliant. It has to be short, specific and true, and repetition does the rest. Write 18 drafts, keep two, and let your customers make the final choice.
Open the HostAd map, choose a screen near your business and test your slogan on real guests this month.
