Types of Advertising: Which One to Choose
A small business owner searches for "types of advertising" and gets a textbook: twenty classifications, forty terms and no answer to the main question — where to put a 10,000 UAH budget. This article works the other way. First comes a short map: which types of advertising exist and how they differ. Then comes a scheme that a local business in Kyiv uses to choose one or two channels and keep the budget focused.
Three ways to classify advertising
All classifications answer three questions. Where does a person see the ad? What does the advertiser want to achieve? In what form does the message arrive?
- By channel — television, radio, print, internet, outdoor advertising, indoor advertising, transit. Industry market reviews, including those of the All-Ukrainian Advertising Coalition (vrk.org.ua), count volumes by channel.
- By goal — brand (to be remembered), promotional (to sell now), informational (to announce something new), reminder (to bring customers back).
- By format — video, static image, text, audio, interactive.
The classification by channel is the most useful one for a decision. The channel defines who sees the ad, how much it costs and how fast you can start.
Types of advertising by channel: comparison table
| Type | Where it works | Strength | Weakness | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Television | National and regional channels | Very large reach | High entry cost, long production | National brands |
| Radio | FM stations | Works in cars and in the background | No picture, hard to measure | Chains, events, seasonal offers |
| Magazines, newspapers, leaflets | Long contact | The audience decreases | Niche B2B media | |
| Search | Search engines | Captures existing demand | Does not create demand, expensive clicks in competitive niches | Services people look for "here and now" |
| Social targeting | Social networks | Precise audience settings | Ads get lost in the feed, the ad account can be blocked | Visual products, online sales |
| Outdoor | Billboards, city lights, facades | Mass contact in the city | Expensive, the contact lasts 2–3 seconds | Large brands, developers |
| Transit | Metro, minibuses, vehicle sides | Daily repeats on a route | Little control over the audience | Mass products and services |
| Indoor | Cafes, bars, malls, business centres, lifts | Long contact in a calm setting, tied to a district | Limited reach of one venue | Local businesses, services, apps |

Types of advertising by goal: four tasks
The same surface does different tasks. Define the task first, then write the copy.
- Brand advertising. The goal is that people recall your name when the need appears. It needs frequency and a stable visual. The result shows in weeks, not days.
- Promotional advertising. The goal is a sale now. It needs a specific offer, an end date and a simple next step: a QR code, a promo code, an address.
- Informational advertising. The goal is to announce an opening, a new service or a new address. It needs one clear message per screen.
- Reminder advertising. The goal is to bring back a customer who has already bought. It works in places the customer visits regularly.
A small business usually combines two tasks: informational at the start and promotional during offers.
Types of advertising by format
The format depends on the channel, but one rule applies: the shorter the contact, the simpler the message.
- Video of 10–20 seconds — movement attracts the eye. The format fits venue screens and social networks.
- Static layout — cheap to produce. It works when the frame has one idea and a large font.
- Text — the base of search advertising. The precision of the query decides the result.
- Audio — radio and podcasts. The format needs repeats, because the listener does not see the address.
How to choose a type of advertising: four questions
1. Where are your customers physically? If the business serves a district — a salon, a car service, a dental clinic, a studio, a delivery service — you need a channel tied to a place. National reach is unnecessary for it: you pay for people who will never come to you.
2. Does the demand exist, or must you create it? If a person searches for the service, search advertising works. If people do not know you yet, you need a channel that shows the ad before the search: indoor, outdoor or social targeting.
3. How much time does the message need? A billboard gives 2–3 seconds. A social feed gives one second before the scroll. A cafe guest waits several minutes for the order and sees the video several times.
4. What budget can you afford to lose on a test? Choose a type of advertising whose minimum entry lets you check the hypothesis in one month. Plan the test with the two-week channel check and combine channels with the media plan template.
The typical result for a local business in Kyiv is two types of advertising. The first one captures existing demand: search and maps. The second one creates demand in the district: screens in nearby venues.
Where HostAd is on this map
HostAd sells one type of advertising — indoor digital advertising on screens in Kyiv venues. The map now shows 29 screens: coffee shops, bakeries and small bars in different districts of the city, from Podil to Holosiiv and Solomianka. An example venue is the screen at Kava.li.
This type of advertising covers three weak points from the table above.
- Entry cost. You book one screen for one month. An annual contract is not necessary.
- Transparent price. The map shows the price of each screen before you book. You pay with no agency markup.
- Measurability. You add a QR code to the video and see the number of scans in your account.
The launch needs no manager and no commercial proposals. You choose a screen on the map, upload a video or a layout, and pay. After moderation, the ad goes on air.
In short
- Types of advertising are classified by channel, goal and format. The channel is the most important one for a decision.
- A local business needs channels tied to a place, not the largest reach.
- A working pair for a small budget: search for existing demand and venue screens to create demand in the district.
Open the HostAd screen map, find venues near your business and book the first screen for one month as a test.
